The second in WESTAF\u2019s series of data-driven lists that profile and celebrate the arts, culture, and creativity of America\u2019s most vital and vibrant places and spaces, the <\/span>Top 10 Music Cities You Need to Know About <\/span><\/i>showcases the thriving local music scenes of smaller cities across the country. WESTAF\u2019s Creative Vitality Lists<\/span>\u00a0offer a snapshot of various trends within neighborhoods, regions, and states and filter, compare, and contrast creative economy data to highlight creative vitality in communities across the United States.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to some of the cities featured in our first list, such as Pittsfield, Massachusetts; Kingston, New York; and Santa Fe, New Mexico, the <\/span>Top 10 Music Cities You Need to Know About <\/span><\/i>list also features newcomers like Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts and Taos, New Mexico. Using data from WESTAF\u2019s CVSuite<\/a><\/span> creative economy data tool, the Creative Vitality\u2122 Index<\/a><\/span> (CVI\u2122) was utilized to measure and rank the creative economies of Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) with populations under 500,000. Developed by WESTAF, the CVI\u2122 is a statistical metric of creative activity per capita within a region. The Index includes data sources from the nonprofit and for-profit arts sectors with indicators in creative occupations, nonprofit revenues, and creative industry sales.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica\u2019s arts, culture, and creative sectors <\/span>contribute $877 billion to the economy each year,\u201d said Christian Gaines, WESTAF\u2019s executive director. \u201cThey account for 4.5% of the GDP and employ 5.1 million American workers. Live music is a huge part of that sector. Live music and travel will both survive this stubborn pandemic, so we hope this list gets you dreaming about the artists, clubs, and concerts that are waiting for you down the road.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
